if you use the correct fabric paint there is no reason why it would not work.
Any advice on fabric paint you would recommend? On my last project (small solid colored ottoman) I used latex paint mixed with fabric medium. Any suggestions are welcome.
Dupli Color Fabric Paint from an auto parts store.
I've never painted furniture but I know from painting (with acrylic paints) on a striped shirt that the pattern tends to bleed through. I also recently saw a "fail" online. Someone had painted a chair with a floral pattern. While the chair looked clean and the colors were different, you could still clearly see the pattern. I wouldn't invest a lot of money in this project, but, if you try it, I'd love to see the result (especially if it works). Good luck.
Painting an entire couch? You might want to think about a nice slip cover from, say, Wayfair or BB&B.
i second the slip cover idea. lots easier than painting.
Go to Pinterest and search: how to paint a couch tutorials. A little bit down on the right side of the page you will find a plaid wing chair with directions on how to paint it. It's by 2 bees in a pod. Good luck!
I once painted over a large awning stripe and had no problem with peek a boo stripes. Looked beautiful and lasted for years.
Even if the design showed through, it would have a tone-on-tone effect and might be more interesting than a solid color.
