best way to divide..get an ax and chop right through from top to bottom. you will need to do this as soon as they start to come up since the roots are very strong. then just replant wherever.
I have done it several ways over the years. I like digging the whole plant up, and then either doing it in 2 or 3 sections. You can use a knife, or sharp shovel and just cut thru it. I started with one in the front yard, and I now have at least 20 off of that one, some of which I gave away. Another variety I have is much larger and I've split the mother plant around 10 times. I've even not replanted a chunk because I didn't have anywhere to put it, and let it out all winter, and in the spring the clump of soil laying on top of the ground will start to show sprouts! lol...they are pretty hardy overall, but they do like some shade~
They are one of the plants that can be divided any time of the year. Just dig them out!
