They make faux crown molding that is made out of a much lighter material and is much easier to handle than regular wood crown molding. Easy to prime and paint, easy to cut, easy to insert. Good luck!
Stencilling! You can do faux crown molding, as in the pic below--it comes in simple and grand--or a border pattern. This link https://www.thisoldhouse.com/how-to/how-to-stencil-border shows how to cut your own, theirs being a border around a door, if you'd like to go that way. The HGTV show, Restored, has shown some lovely, tasteful stencils in a couple of shows. I emphasize tasteful because in the early '90s I did what I thought at the time were gorgeous--and were at the time expensive--stenciled borders in my then-living room and breakfast area. I was so proud of them, but look back now and cringe. So I'm not suggesting you do floral borders or trailing vines, which mine were, but there's lots of designs out there! I may even consider doing something like the one I've shown here. Inexpensive and easy to do. No cutting, nailing, etc. Good luck!
We used chair rail in our bathrooms and kitchen. It looks nice and was much easier to install. I would not put in it in a large room.
Thank you, Suzanne - another good idea!
