What are the best annual flowers to plant under a maple tree?

We have a 5 year old maple that has superficial roots so it is hard to plant annuals. In addition, the leaves are so full that not a lot of sunlight gets to the flowers and they do not thrive even though they receive maximum sunlight during the day.

    Instead of planting them in the ground make containers plantings with coleus,caladiums,non-stop begonias,Persion shield,cordyline,add tropical houseplants as well for additional interest...Croton...Bromeliad,Wild gingerPurple fountain grass.So many ideas.

    i'm in favor of the containers- remember if it can be made to hold water and dirt you can plant in it. have some fun!
