  • End of June toping the 3 ft cage 1
  • July 9th after a week of record high temps and very little rain...the plants here are loaded with tomatoes inside the cage and full of blooms too!

Tomatoes and their need for water

I started may 28th planting 4 tomatoes around a garbage can with holes drilled in the bottom rim and a second row up about 10 inches... buried the can to where the top holes just barely ...»
were above the ground... put in two shovels full of compost... then I fill the can up with water ever 2 days and try not to water the leaves... these four plants are now 5 ft 4 inches in less that a month and a half and loaded with green tomatoes and about a hundred sets of tomato blossoms...

  • Stone leftover from another project and three galvanized trash can lids become a bird bath grouping! Another of my "use what you have" ventures! More pictures and directions at http://ourfairfieldhomeandgarden.com 3
  • Start by building a base. Add one level at a time while keeping it fairly level. This takes a few tries to keep it level and sturdy. 1
  • When the stacked stone is the height desired, add the galvanized lid. One down and two more to go!
  • The lids I had were different sizes so I made the bases larger or smaller to fit the lid. Also vary the heights to add interest.
  • Here's the tallest one filled and ready for customers!
  • Save out some stone to put in the top of each lid as a landing place for birds, to keep the lid in place if a larger bird or squirrel comes calling and for looks!

  • This is my "totem". I've had it outdoors for several years now. It's held up really well except for the "ladder" incident last fall while a helpful neighbor was helping me clean out the gutters. 9
  • These are the tools you'll need. I use GE II Silicone for Windows and Doors (clear) with a caulk gun.
A level will come in handy to make sure your totem doesn't lean. 4
  • Wash and dry (thoroughly) your glassware. I suggest you let your vases and such dry overnight. If you have ANY moisture inside, it will be sealed inside once you apply your sealant.
  • apply your silicone to one of your pieces, then add your next piece to it.
  • remove the excess silicone with your finger or a paper towel.
*tip* I generally glue two pieces together, while gluing another two pieces together. After those four pieces set up overnight, then I glue the two (or 3) sets together.
  • *tip* to keep water from standing in your plates, turn them upside down. I like to separate my large vases and such with clear plates. A microwave plate makes a great base piece. 3
  • You can use a plate on top right side up to make a bird feeder or a birdbath. 6

  • Before I came up with the simple solution - I was one of those people chipping away and cussing out loud! This way takes forever! you get slivers, its a MESS!
  • Laying the towel down.it Was a very thick towel and dripping wet when I put it on the pieces
  • one or two test runs in the morning reveals - very little muscle power at all and it was peeling right off!
  • Slicing through that crud like a hot knife through butter!

How to Strip Veneer - no fumes, no power tools, EASY!

So simple, so easy! I have been trying to tackle the messy job of chipping veneer off pieces to re finish them and what a pain in the hiney! I thought of an idea, and while I was testing ...»
the theory, I asked our lovely facebook followers their favorite method. Well, pretty much everyone said either using a wet towel and an iron ( which wrecks both the iron and towel) OR use a heat gun - (which would then have the fumes from the adhesive floating up in your face - or house and then requires use of masks and such) SO Here you go. Very easy - SOAK a towel so it is dripping wet in a mixture of half water and half vinegar. Place it on the veneer. Have a girls night out and let it soak over night. Make sure it is SOAKING wet. I even went back later and used a water bottle and just poured it right onto the towel to make sure it was soaked! Come back in the morning and use a putty knife or chisel and it will peel up like butter! #StrippingVeneer
