You need a stud finder. Lowe's, Home Depot , etc . carry them and they are worth the investment . Otherwise , any shelf or heavy pictures you hang will fall out and leave large gaping holes in the sheet rock .
I like the floating shelves myself. Ikea makes them in various sizes, or you can make yourself if your handy. Depends what you plan to put on them, you can find many pre-made shelves for hanging on 2 screws (put wall anchors in if you into a stud).
