Yes you can use a varnish to seal!
I used neutral shoe polish on mine. Works just as well and is a lot cheaper
I use General Finishes Flat Top Coat. It gives the same look as a wax seal, but I think it is more durable. They now have one called Flat Flat. Really good product.
Shoe polish, johnsons wax, general finishes top coat, minwax water base clear coat all work. Varnish, oil, and shellac yellow with age. They will work but will change your color.
