I have an old farm house that needs to come down. It was built about 1890 from oak and black walnut harvested from the farm Can anyone suggest a way I can get someone to take it down and haul the wood away? Anyone want an old farm house? Location: SW Wisconsin.

You can list it just the way you put it here, on Craigslist , I've had a lot of luck with their listings. Too bad you are in Wisconsin or I might take you u[ on it. I live in Ohio. Good luck!

@Kendra B This is a wonderful site and who knows who may see my post and take my offer. I will post on Craigslist before I call the fire dept. I would hate to see all that beautiful old wood go up in smoke.
  • Julie just be careful who you let do this! The liability may be greater than just contacting your local fire department and having them use the house for practice. I know there is lots of wood but in todays world of lawsuits I would not take the chance on just anybody doing this. I would contact a lawyer and see if in your area there is a waiver that someone can sign releasing you of all liability and if it would hold up in court. Put the ad for a contractor or "picker" who will assume his own liability. But be careful of giving it away. Windows are worth about $5-100 or more a piece and trim can go for up to $5 a foot in some areas. Good luck.

@Julie The liability issue can be solved if they have workmen's comp insurance for comprehensive and personal injury! And you can contact your insurance agent and see if you can purchase a rider for your own policy. I always make sure there is proper coverage before hiring any workers!

I think many people who do restoration projects would love to be offered your barn boards. Just make sure as others have said that they carry their own insurance. Some would probably even pay you for the lumber. Good luck.

Julie, C Renee is correct in mentioning that these materials can have significant value. I have seen black walnut (1"X6") go for $10 a foot. Before I gave this material away I'd contact any businesses (within 50/100 miles) that sell salvaged wood and/or architectural elements and see if they'd be interested in buying the salvage rights. Lets face it, the only way they can get inventory is from places like yours.

Post it on Craigslist and you will get a ton of people who would love to. Please screen the person first or have a large man with you if you meet at the house

I heard a tip about meeting people from Craigslist. Meet them at the police station, not in your home. And yes a large man (or 2) would be good.
