how 'bout getting creative with a paint brush
There are tiles that look like stone if you want that look. Or cedar wood planks as long as you aren't worried about embers from the fireplace. I would look for pictures of what you like and then find a creative way to get the look -- or come back and ask for ideas.
Tile comes in so many colors and styles, you are sure to find something you like. Paint is also a good quick inexpensive update
