If your curtains are of a heavy material, you should probably vacuum them once a month - leaving them up using an upholstery attachment to your vacuum. Start at the top, holding the drape out, and vacuum from top to bottom. If the curtains are sheer, they may be machine washable. Every three months, take them down, shake them out, and put in the washer using a delicate cycle. You can then hangs them back up, while still damp, to dry. The weight of hanging will help release the wrinkles.
I'd say a good seasonal cleaning should be good. If you have allergies or think that your home is suffering from too much dust then you may want to clean them a bit more often- once a month.
Curtains do not accumulate dust that much especially if the material is of glossy type of cloth. I wash my drapes every three months. and sometimes just vacuum it a little bit and then I spray it a little with a fabric spray for a fresh smell.
When you see that the are dirty
I live in a dusty place, plus I love having every window and door open as much as possible, plus I have a bunch of pets. I wash constantly, and everything in my house must be easy to clean. I have white sheers in my bedroom, they get washed once a month . . .
Wash and hang back up right out of the washer.
