The fun part about raised gardens is that you get to create the conditions. A good mixture can consists of 50% screened topsoil and 50% high-quality compost. These two ingredients should be mixed together well (not layered), and once in place will never need to be tilled. Happy gardening!!
I would recommend buying potting soil (not top soil) and it is already premixed for you with weed-free rich soil and vermiculite. Add some good compost. Mix well and you're good to go!
I've been mixing my own potting mix- 1 part pearl lite 1 part peat moss 1 part composted manure 1 part top soil. mels mix from the sq. foot gardening uses
1/3 vermiculite, 1/3 rd peat moss, 1/3 compost. add a time release fertilizer according to the directions on the fertilizer container.
