Help! The leaves on my rosebush have a weird color and texture!

Our rosebushes used to be green and leafy with a uniform texture. Now some of the new growth is slightly purple and has a different smaller leaf. Is this normal? Thanks for any help you can offer!
We have three rosebushes planted together to form a hedge along our patio. They were planted by the previous owner, but we enjoy them.

For the first few years we lived here, the bushes had a nice uniform green growth to the leaves.
Then the new growth on the bush closest to our house seemed to be more purple-ish with smaller leaves (see above). And now the middle bush has this purple new growth on it too. Is this normal?

The bush farthest away from the house still seems to grow normally (see top photo). We also have the same type of rosebush in our front yard that has not developed this purple-ish growth. Any help you can offer would be appreciated. Thanks!

  • Might be a deficiency or could be normal. In the morning I can take photos of mine for you to compare. If need be contact a reputable nursery that sells roses and see what they suggest. On mine the new spring grwth comes out ourple and leafs out to a lovely green. Have you fed them? Changed brands?

This looks like a virus called rose rosette. It's spread by a mite (not an insect, but related to spiders) that hides in buds and is too small to see with the naked eye. It's most likely to appear on a weedy shrub rose called multiflora rose. Eliminate all the multiflora rose within 300 feet of your roses, if you can. Contact your cooperative extension service office or a state rose society for more information. And there's no control or resistant roses at this time. Clare

Thanks so much! I hate the idea of pulling out our rose bushes, but I guess it must be done :(

I agree, have had the same problem in the past and had to eliminate the rose so it would not spread to other roses. Good luck

I have learned that any bush type rose LOVES a great hair cut. I once tried to kill a rose bush (it was really big) by moving it and then trimming off the parts that died - in July. Amazingly, it prospered. I haven't been by that house - we sold to see if it is still alive but my money is on it.
