I am always battling dust! To get rid of it, pick a room everyday, and do it thoroughly so it's not too overwhelming.i like to use the Swiffer duster because you can reach all over and throw the dust away when you're done, as opposed to the dusters that basically just move dust around your house.
To prevent a lot of buildup, the only thing I can do is to religiously dust 1x per week, the whole house. I also try to keep the windows closed when it isn't necessary to have them open, because in my case, the dust comes from outside.
It is an ongoing battle in my house. One, I have a ton of pets, which adds fur into the mix. Second, I LOVE to have all the doors and windows open as much as possible. (When you work in a highrise office building you crave fresh air and I am a nature girl at heart.) Third, I live in an arid climate aka hot, sweaty and dusty through the summer months, which, in my opinion is at least 6 months. Hence I dust constantly. I am a big fan of swiffer type products, and have found some great DIY environmentally friendly tips here on Hometalk to at least partially replace continual purchasing the disposable ones to reduce waste. And I am very lucky to have a cleaning lady that comes in once a month to help me with the the things like baseboards, wall washing, etc.
Look for a gadget that directs the dryer exhaust thru a'' little pot of water'' that later you empty with the dust/lint collected. I think it cost about 15 bucks. Walmart or Target. Look online. The thing worked great.
I found dust doesn't "stick" to furniture that I have treated with furniture wax. It is also good for the furniture. You still have to dust, but it doesn't build up as fast.
Have you tried vacuuming your registers and vents at least once a month. The return register is taking the dusty air and it just goes threw your filter and come out into space again. Or just have air cleaners throughout house. I agree I love those dusters you could clean during a commercial or two in each room so that it's not all at one time and time consuming. This way you get little breaks. Remember an inch is a cinch a mile is a trial. A little goes a long way to make job more manageable.
We started using much higher end filters in our heating and cooling system. It took a while to convince my husband of that. The ones we use have been able to remove a little more dust and allergens out of the air. Although the 2 dogs and 1 cat hair is never going to abate. We went from wall to wall carpeting to all floors (with area rugs) and that helped a bit too, but that is a little costly.
Every time I clean my mirrors, they end up having tons of streaks and almost look worse than before I started. What could I use to clean them that won't leave streaks...
