Never heard of using a laundry jug for a dust pan because it's not flat. You can make a scoop or a funnel out of a laundry jug.
You could try cutting the bottom off and angle on side so you could sweep the dirt into it.
Yes cut the curved edge off and you can still use the handle. A box works even better. Cut one end at an angle and sweep it in. The same style can be used to hold magazines also.
