I painted mine red when I first set up housekeeping back in the Dark Ages - white kitchen with red cabinets and refrigerator. Didn't look too bad.
Look for examples on-line. I've seen many ideas including using some of the latest printed duct/duck😆 tape in a variety of designs.
We removed the handles, then glued bead board and trim on ours using Gorilla glue, and then painted it to match the cupboards. I also primed and painted the sides to match the sides of the cupboards.
