How can I make an Oval table with leaves?

i saw this in a thrift store. it was a table with dropped sides and a piece of wood in the middle to make it look like a drop leaf table. take the wood piece out nd you have the table which expands to take on 2 leaves. so it goes from a drop side table to a tablt e that can serve 12. it seemed so simple when i saw it, but now i can;t imagine how it was done any ideas? has anyone seen something similar to this
