Not at all! Several years ago I tile my whole tub/shower including the ceiling. Use mastic tile adhesive not thinset.

Yes! Use small tile not the giant tiles they have now days. Then use thin set. Easy enough and easy to clean.
Mastic shouldn't be used in a bathtub/shower location because of moisture. Use thinset.
