    You can white wash it....

I painted my basement paneling white. Use a primer first and then as many coats as necessary. I love it!

Joan, did you sand first? We have some glossy sheets of non-grooved paneling in our basement I'd love to do white!

You can use wood filler or grout to fill some of the paneling lines. (Be sure to sand well) Might make for a cute design. Then try a paint desigtn (paint, paint with varnish, paint striped pattern for a really different look.

Sherry --I did not sand it. I just washed it down with a bucket of Dawn & water, let it dry, and painted. You could always try to use some primer on a section and see what happens. A primer may take care of the glossiness. It's worth a try. I used a regular white Glidden primer and then Glidden satin white paint (which also has primer in it--not sure if they even make paint without primer anymore). I do have the grooves in the paneling which I "stippled" with a narrow paint brush.

What a difference the white paint made. The room looks huge and so crisp and clean now. It's my pride and joy! :) Good luck!
