Gel stain is a pretty simple, and very forgiving process! You'll want to test the stain that you choose on your stairs or on similar oak ahead of time because it can be very difficult to tell exactly how the wood will appear - it's not always like the sample photos. Since, with stain, you'll see the wood grain (as opposed to paint) take a look - you may need to sand. You'll see that many people say that you don't need to sand with stain and that may very well be the case, but make sure that whatever texture you see, you want to continue to see - because you likely will after you stain. And if not, then do sanding where needed before you get started.
