Oh man, I really hear you :) First of all, are you familiar with any of these apps where you can scan your kids' artwork and they send you a book each year? I've started doing that because I feel super guilty getting rid of it (even though at the end of the day, no, I don't think that they're ever going to care, haha) - here is one of those apps that I can recommend: https://www.plumprint.com/
I keep plastic tubs with lids, one for each child, labeled with their names. Put it all in their tubs, and at the end of the school year, go through it and save favorites.
My kids always wanted to display their artwork before it got "stored away". I created a display area on the wall of the stairwell. Cork sheeting was glued to a light weight board and framed to match other molding used in the house. When new artwork came home from school it replaced the older work. I let each child decide whether to keep it or set it free. (Storage box or recycling box). For each child, I kept a large three ring binder for their best work and used page protectors to hold each sheet with a description card giving dates and details. When they moved out of the family home I sent it off with them and a photo album with copies of memories of their childhood. That also included the end of year report cards. My kids are in their 30's now and still have these collections.
my kids are a adults now but when little each had a container for school materials and stuff were kept end of each year i took all papers and put in art file container and all art projects like clay etc went in my big tub when they graduated they got their paper file... hours of fun memories all three still have them and i have all my handmade gifts
