What is a good organic, homemade recipe for my vegetable garden, to repel pests?

My mom used to have very good luck with blood meal, but it's purchased, not homemade. Also, planting marigolds will deter rabbits.

  I soak the leaves with water and then sprinkle cayenne pepper on them as well as in a circle around the plant. Little critter ate them once and never came back. You can also sprinkle on the tomatoes as it won't get absorbed into the tomato. It worked for me.... but if it rains, you will have to re-do this. Hope it helps.
