You can actually paint the brick! This is one of my favorite painted brick fireplace makeovers - and it's a tutorial, too: https://www.hometalk.com/diy/living-room/fireplaces-mantels/painted-brick-fireplace-white-redo-4242640

You can also plaster the fireplace. It creates a soft, modern look. I love this one.
I used drywall mud and skimed over enough to add texture. Then I painted it white. I love the clean updated timeless look. Good luck 🌻
Granite Transformations covered mine with a granite and mother-of-pearl composite for a sleek contemporary look and it's beautiful.
I'm in the process of doing a fireplace makeover right now! After making the fire place opening square, we installed 5/8" plywood panels over all the brick using masonry screws drilled into the bricks and will be soon installing drywall over that. The new oak mantle, ceramic tile surround and hearth will soon follow.
I would try painting it first because this would be the cheapest and easiest if it turns out that you like it. I had an ugly red brick fireplace. Painted it white and it looks wonderful. If you just HATE whatever yours is made of, then the above suggestions look great. Good luck. Once done you will wonder why you didn't do it sooner! :)
