Marine varnish. easy to apply. sand lightly, apply varnish. Save my table from time kids were little until I gave it to a friend 25 years later.
refinished 2 small tables with poly over 30 yrs ago. Never a problem and they have been used by kids of all ages, still looking good. no rings from any drinks.
poly is easier. I did my cherry table 20 years ago and it still looks great. I went with a satin finish, lightly sanding between coats.
