Use the spindle as the body.....add wings and make a dragonfly. In winter, paint white add a painted of stocking cap, scarf & "buttons or coal paint" for a snowman. Orange paint? Make a skinny jack o lantern or pumpkin.
Attach spindle to a chunky wooden base and cut to size for a candle holder. Varying heights would be gorgeous on fireplace hearth or mantle. As for it being plastic, the paint will take care and you can end up with a candle holder.
You can add a wooden disk to the top of the spindle and set hurricane shade and put a candle inside. Be sure to use adhesive to hold glass hurricane shade on top.
You can make tall candleholders from spindles. Just add a wooden base and use a terra cotta saucer on the top to place the the candle. You can distress and paint. For the wood base you can use pine wood little plaques you can buy at a craft store.
Another option is using old drawers to make accent shelving. http://www.hometalk.com/diy/bedroom/furniture/got-old-drawers-then-maybe-you-want-to-make-them-into-4036214
