The dogs ate almost all my cherry tomatoes last year.
Good luck with that. Some breeds of dogs are bred to 'go to earth' like dachshunds, and many terriers, as well as some of the bigger breeds who dig out of boredom or to find a cool spot to lay. Maybe your dogs need more structured play time, training, or toys for diversions. If that is not the case, try using a heavy layer of mulch to curb the appeal of the areas where they are digging. If you do have one of the aforementioned dog breeds, try providing a specific spot that they can dig and use the heavy mulch near the house. Verbally correct them when they start digging in the wrong spot and direct them to the designated area for their digging pleasure. Again, good luck. Patient persistence will prevail.
I don't have an answer for you but my friend's dog has just started digging in her yard and she found out she was digging out grub worms and eating them.
