I like dry brushing over paint to make something look "antique"...it doesn't destroy the furniture. Here's a good tutorial. https://www.countrychicpaint.ca/pages/drybrushing
Miss Mustard Seed makes a paint that makes a piece look old. It really does work. She refers to it as the "chippy" look. I have used it on many occasions and always with success.
Have also distressed pieces using sandpaper on the areas of drawers and edges that would normally get the most use. Then if you want to distress a piece with black you can use shoe polish. Here is a tutorial on many techniques..... http://decoratedlife.com/1950s-french-dresser-1800s-france/
I've sanded dark wood pieces lightly, then refinished them with a white lacquer paint but led the wood color show through a little.
