Is Creeping Charlie in your lawn a good thing or a bad thing?
Is there a sure-fire way to get rid of Creeping Charley?
Ha, ha, ha! Great invention. I'm in North Cowichan over on Vancouver island and can appreciate the slug problem. I fought the slugs, but then the rabbits ate the hostas. 'm now the woman who walks around with little bits of fencing to cover garden holes. LOL
Have you tried sprinkling a circle of table salt around your plants? The slugs and snails hate salt!
Salt is bad for the soil. If you sprinkle a line of bonemeal apparently slugs won't cross it.
Beer. Take the yogurt cups and put beer in them. Slugs love the stuff more than your hostas!!
I use Beer and Dawn dish soap mix in a spray bottle with water. Than spray all your garden plants with this mix.
great idea! think i'll use it.
but famingstar, why put beer in the dish soap? wouldn't that attract the slugs to your plant? I think i'd just go w the cup idea... looks better to me!
You can also put a line of crushed egg shells around the plants and the calcium is good for the soil. Another trick I used when living in Seattle is to put copper wire around staked to the ground or secured around sides of flower pot. Slugs CAN'T cross the wire . It causes an electric charge when their bodies touch it, something to do with their body chemistry.
Maybe try newspaper bunched up then,....
iam not sure how it is spelled but diametius earth like you us in pool filters works great just sprinkle around your plants and it is good for the earth you can even find it at wal mart
Why not sprinkle garden line I use the 50 lb bags to sprinkle around the fenced in
backyard where fido runs around. Started by the house and then worked my way out to the fence. Ticks and fleas will get their butts burned if they don't leave. The lime should be safe for the soil and it won't hurt the birds so maybe this will work for you to get rid of sluggs. Also to keep your plants from being eaten in a blender and some water, dish soap and a lot of hot peppers churn this up so you can spray it on your plants even deer will not bother them as they just take one taste and wolla no more varmits eating your plants
As a young wife with no TV, in North Carolina, we poured salt on slugs, then watched them dissolve. Gruesome? Yes, but it ranked right up there with watching the windsock at the airport! Now, I'm back home in Arkansas and use shredded newspaper (crosscut) for mulch. Don't know why, but the slugs are no longer sliding their way up my door or around my plants. I have done this for years and the shreds morph into nice black earth that'll make even the most reluctant plants flourish. Hint--don't put it out on a windy day or the neighbors won't like it.
How do the slugs get into the yogurt ? That hole seems too small. Have you tried this before and did itwork?
A low dish or pie plate and put beer in it, they climb in because they are attracted and love the stuff, but end up dead
The only safe salt to use around your plants is Epsom Salts, who's really not salt but magnesium sulfate which is really good for the soil but not the slugs. Crushed eggshells with good results. They are also good for the soil. I live in Texas and we have the slug problem every spring.
I've heard they can't cross sand either.
I have been doing this for at least 10yrs. Make sure that the beer is at least room temp. It works.
