How do you ensure your collage work is smooth and even?

I suggest giving it a top layer of Mod Podge to keep everything in place.
I use a spatula with Mod Podge to make sure there are no bubbles or wrinkles.
a sponge brush works well. I have been known to use my fingers too!
Once you have done everything in your power, fingers, etc, to smooth it out, let it dry and then put several layers of a good clear sealant over it all.
I tend to agree with the others Mod Podge & fingers to smooth everything out.
