Try to avoid having several small pieces of furniture. Just 2-3 bigger pieces actually mashed it look bigger. Keep art or photos on the wall to a minimum. Keep colors simple...try to just use 2-3 shades of either soft or bright colors, not a lot of contrast. And make it your style. You want to love being in there.

Painting the room white. Not using curtains bigger than the window or fitting cute blinds instead. Use every inch above the floor for storage i.e floating shelves, and use nicely decorated boxes or baskets to store things inside them on the shelves. Even the bed can be a storage box if you can make one the size of the bed. Use the walls and keep the floor free as much as possible.

use a monochrome color scheme- go to the paint department- find a color that you like for the walls. on that strip are variations of that color, and occasionally an accent color. keep your curtains tailored, not ruffles. think high end motel suite. i put a wire cube set in my closet instead of using a chest of drawers. used a length of pine board -sealed it, put coat hooks on it ,and picture hanging hardware on the back. robes, belts, hats other accessories- bangles necklaces scarves live there.

use under the bed for off season clothes. remove any thing you haven't used/ worn regularly in 3 years and donate to a charity shop. use a tv table/ tray for a night stand. takes up less visual space-plus you can paint it as you wish.

We have a very small master bedroom, not big enough for a dresser so hubby build some shelves at each end of the closet with the rod across the closet to hang our clothes. Then he commissioned a wood crafter to make a long headboard for our bed with 'boxes' attached as tables with one shelf inside. We also have a vertical blind just in the window well.

The room is quite comfortable and uncluttered. The shelving in the closet means we have no need for a dresser and we keep a lovely tall wicker basket in the corner by the window for extra quilts and blankets. We love it! Perhaps you could do something similar... good luck with your project!
