My neighbor's outside A/C unit runs all the time and is very noisy

I live in a town home and my neighbor turns on and leaves on their A/C when the temperature hits 65 degrees. It runs all the time and is very noisy. So much so, that trying to sit out there and relax is impossible. What can I do to block the noise or at least muffle it enough to make it tollerable?

Photo would help to provide a solution.

Maybe some type of a water feature? Add the splash of water to cover the sound of the air conditioner.

Have you talked to them about it? Maybe they would be open to putting a small wooden enclosure around it to redirect the sound. Otherwise, as suggested above a noisy fountain plus some well placed potted trees or shrubs can also help block the sound.

I agree--try reasonable discussion about enclosing it before hitting them with bylaws! Maybe they hate the sound as much as you do. A vented enclosure may also save wear on the unit, too, so they may welcome the savings.

In my community there are by-laws that restrict noisy air conditioners and heat pumps maybe yours has them too. Check it out.

Talk to them. The compressor may just need servicing to be acceptably quiet.
