We have small ants in our house, dark colored.

We keep the area clean, etc. I use vinegar spray on the floor and this keeps them at bay for a few days. We put down ant poison that they supposed like and are supposed to take it back to their nest. This doesn't seem to be working. We have a little boy running around so we have to be careful about the poisons. Can you help, suggest anything?

Thank you

We have many animals and don't use poisons, either. See if you can find the ant on the internet. We use both boric acid powder and/or diatomaceous earth. You can find both at garden centers, feed stores and the web.

  • I have used cinnamon sticks and powder to deter ants from coming into the house. Try to find where the ants are entering the house and seal with a little spray foam in a can.

Use baby powder! Lightly sprinkle a little trail where you have seen them. Something in the powder affects their direction or something. You will finally see them walking around in circles and they just disappear. I read about this and did not believe it till I tried this method at my mother's house and it worked! She had them for years and even the company that sprays her house could never find where they were coming in. That baby powder did the trick!

Try Terro ant bait. Available at Home Depot and Ace Hardware. Comes in traps, powder, liquid and various other forms. Is not overly expensive, and it works. Who wants to fool with all the 'home remedies' when something like this will do the job....I don't.

I had the same problem. I used a regular pesticide but I went outside and found the source by following their trail. I sprayed where I found the trail and outside edge of the house in the front around the porch. I had to do it once more mid summer. I tried all the remedies and researched every natural product. They find their way around cinnamon and I have a list of all the failed attempts of other naturals. I like the spray. It just worked perfectly. No more ants!

Borax from the grocery store works wonderfully. Also peppermint oil, which has an added benefit of repealing spiders.

Terro traps have always worked for me and my small dogs don't bother with them. Had a terrible invasion of the "ant people" last month....set out three Terro traps and they vanished in four days and haven't been back despite all the rain we've had here in northern California.

I live in the mojave desert, and there seems to be a lot of every kind of ant and roach imaginable (and flies...yikes!) The only things that have really worked for me are the electronic pest repellents and my "special" pancake syrup. I put a few tablespoons or so of corn syrup in a bowl and add a pinch of baking soda and mix well. then I use bottle caps, jar lids, etc. to place a few drops of the syrup, then place those on windowsills, the corners of my cabinets, under the fridge, etc...anywhere there could be a problem. At first you will see more activity, because the smell of the syrup draws them out. Because it is not a "poison", they take it to their nests as food, but they cannot digest the baking soda. I was amazed at how well this worked on flies...who'd have thought? Some people prefer to mix in flour to make a solid...but this one works well for me. Be careful not to put in too much baking soda...you need very little for it to work, and it needs to smell like the syrup. Plus, there is no problem for your children or pets. Hope this helps
