Keurig sells a cleaner especially for their machines. I researched the same question just recently to see about cleaning the Keurig in the office where I work. I went to their website for info and saw the solution they offer. The website also has lots of information and instructions about maintaining their products. The cleaning solution isn't expensive and is probably your best option. I think the main problem is that they get mineral deposits on the mechanism inside, which you can't get to. This is especially common in areas with hard water. The (outside) water tank itself is easy to empty and clean -- I recommend vinegar. I clean my own drip coffeemaker with a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water -- just run it through and then a second pot of just clean water to rinse. Works perfectly ! I don't think this can be done with a Keurig, but not 100% sure about that.
Check out keurig.com for all the info you need. Good Luck !
Run white vinegar through the machine which will de-scale the mineral deposits. Then run plain water through.
We also use straight white vinegar. Occasionally we need to use a thumb tack or needle on the nozzle that punctures the pod. Also I've found if you use loose grounds in a reusable pod, it plugs up faster. I started using the mini paper filters inside the reusable pod and have not had a problem since. I am on my second Keurig, my first lasted almost 10 years.
