Lightening a yellowed cabinet

Lou
by Lou
We recently purchased this antique white, pre-aged, pre-distressed, high quality media cabinet. The look is great yet in certain light the pre-aged antique white takes on a yellow hue. We do realize that yellowing is what actually happens when white ages but did not anticipate the cabinet would actually mimic yellowing. Our mistake. One we may just have to live with. Especially since this piece is expensive and has such character.

Is there any way to whiten the cabinet without obliterating the worn and distressed look? Thank you in advance.

I whitened yellowed bathroom ceiling tray that went over the fan and light by using 40 volume peroxide. I smeared the peroxide all over the tray, put it in a zip lock bag and put it in the sun until it turned white. Since your piece is large you could probably use saran wrap or something like it to keep the peroxide from drying out.

Jetta, using peroxide sounds like a good idea but the cabinet has so many angles I'm not sure how Lou could get that to work, especially on the louvers. Maybe make a paste of peroxide and borax or baking soda? Test it first on the back of the cabinet to make sure it doesn't take the paint off! Good luck Lou!

You might try wrapping in cheesecloth or an old sheet, spraying with peroxide, then throw a painters plastic sheet overtop and securing at the bottom.

We have decided to live with the finish as is. Thanks for your replies.

You can find peroxide. In small spray bottles. I use peroxide to clean with and love the spray bottle they provide. It cost a little more for the. Brown spry bottle. Just keep refilling the bottle.
