Hire a professional. DIY leaves you open for leaks and drafts.

You can create an illusion of a wider window (from the inside) using curtain rod and curtain placement. Extend your rod past the actual window as much as you want and hang the curtain on the wall.

It first depends if you have any framing experience. If so, a new longer header is needed with the bracing. You can cut the other bracing as needed. The still and its supports can be lowered into the enlarged window frame opening. These can be secured with either a pneumatic nail gun or a screw gun.

If you haven't the experience, save your self the heart ache and hire a carpenter.

This response muddies the water! STILL? BRACING?! First Q. is, are you wanting to enlarge down, or sideways? Down is easy - if sideways and you had to ask, you better not try. Assuming Larry means sill, that is the at the bottom of the window and. Second, you cannot easily install a longer header (that IS proper terminology). By bracing perhaps he means the JACK studs (also called trimmers) that support the header.

You are absolutely correct Don. I misspelled sill and plead guilty of letting my fingers get ahead of me. I also should have defined if I was talking about a larger by width or by length. As far as widening the opening I have done it numerous times with a longer in length header. The idea that it is easy to do was not implied by me and I'm sorry if some have taken idea to home. The limit in lines is what stops me from trying to explain the process. I did in my defense, state that with no experience a carpenter should be hired. Live long and prosper.
