Help! How to deal with fleas in the yard, house and my dog and cats?

Susan
by Susan
Last year no problem with fleas. This year holy cow! I use really excellent flea products on my pets: Advantage Multi for dogs; and Frontline Combo for cats. They have always worked. However, I ran out of the Advantage Multi for my dog and couldn't get to the Vet, so purchased Sergeant's Evolve for Dogs. I also bathed the dog and both cats in an excellent flea shampoo, and sprayed the carpet with Adams aerosol spray that is excellent! I know my dog is bringing in the fleas from the yard and that is how the cats are getting them. Dog sleeps in a separate room for now, but cats have free roam.

But, now I am very allergic to them and break out in itchy rashes and had to go to the Dr. to get a steroid injection and take steroids for 6 days, and apply a steroid cream. And... I thought I had the problem licked last week! ha! Butalas, no these Texas fleas are jumping and biting, and I have the itchy rash again, and my pets are covered with fleas again, and they are even jumping on the kitchen linoleum! I will go to the Dr. today, just to keep my sanity, as the itching is driving me CRAE CRAE.

All of the products include killing the flea eggs.

I have heard of the 50-50 % solution of water and vinegar. Just wonder IF it works, and is it safe to put on furniture? What can I use on the backyard? Trouble is it has rained for weeks at a time in San Antonio. Any home remedies out there for me, my pets, my home, and my yard? Or do my Hometalk friends know of any for sure products? I am retired, so ya know my budget is limited. Love you all, and Many Thanks!!!!
Love to my HomeTalk Family,
Susan from San Antonio

Every spring we treat our lawn with bug killing granules. Ortho Bug B gone is a good one. Yes I know not environmentally friendly but with our locale & pets it's the only thing we've used that works. Per directions spread granules and water in with hose. Allow to dry a few hours before allowing pets into area. Liquids are available and you do not need to water them in--they DID NOT work for us, so back to granules. From our vet we purchase a pill for the dogs that lasts 12 weeks. This is the program that has worked the best for us.

Chery, I thought about the granules. Thanks for your thoughtful response. My dog is a big grass eater. Do you think it would be safe for him to eat the grass?? Also, it has been raining a lot here, and the rainwater pools in the yard. Just wonder if that would be safe for my dog, since he likes to drink the rain water.? What do you think? I guess I could wait until a no rain week and use the granules then. The granules sound the easiest for the lawn.

  • I spray the perimeter of my property and the base of my home with straight cleaning vinegar for the first application and 50 / 50 water and cleaning vinegar once a month thereafter. Here is the clincher though. You have to be very careful where you apray. Vinegar will kill flowers plants and bushes if not properly applied. Will also mar the paint on your house. Must be sprayed on ground only. I fill up my 2 gallon pump sprayer (I have a separate one labled just for this purpose) and spray away. I have used this method for decades. Works well for me. My grandparents used this method in the late 1800's as back then there were no commercial products. They had a farm with goats, chickens, rabbits, cats and dogs. If it was good enough for them, it is good enough for me. Plus relatively inexpensive and environmentally friendly, my garden lizards don't mind a bit. And will not harm the pets either, if they step in wet vinegar and then lick their paw, they will make a face, but won't hurt them. I have one old dog that we can't administer the typical flea meds, makes him sick, and at 16 1/2 that is the last thing we want to do to him. Fingers crossed we do not have a banner fleas season, fingers crossed. I feel for you. No matter what method you use, go for it. Hope you feel better soon! 🤗

    • Good afternnon Susan!

Not you are not crazy, just passionate. A highly coveted trait in my opinion. Last night I had a bit of a run in with a remote neighbor on my neighborhood network, he said something not nice about cats and I responded - in a rather sharp manner. An ugly story not worth repeating. My point was taken well and at least the person apologized.

Your Easter sounded like a bunch of fun! Ours was nice and quiet as expected.

Yes, I know good old Cesar, he has a home and compound not far from where I live. When he is not on the road he stays here and we use the same vet. Bailey's issues stem from puppyhood as she is a rescue, as are all the others. Its is a long story, and as she ages it gets worse. She is fine with the day to day routine, but she needs routine. If we do something out of the ordinary it upsets her whereas the others are more "go with the flow" type animals. She will be fine . . . Cesar charges a pretty penny for his services, far out of my league, but I have had a few freebie tips . . .

Yes stay in touch! I would love that! I will find out how to do that.

Thank you, you are just too darn sweet! Kisses, hugs and snuggles for everyone! 🤗

Ok must run, need to cook for all the 4 legged furry and not so furry ones! Chicken, sweet potato and broccoli tonight!

Andvantix makes a yard spray as well as a flea bomb for your house. It's the only brand I trust!

I use a lawn bug killer called elimitator fire ant killer from walmart its about $5-$10 depending on what size bag you buy. I spread it with a hand held spreader all around house and yard it kills alot of things bugs wise. I do it before a rain and let it wash in, or I water right after, but haven't had problem with tics or flees, when I see them around I repeat. I haven't had any problems with my dog getting sick from, it so I continue to use it. The big bag last me most or the spring and summer then buy up more for fall. Works awesome on fire ants, put on water and their dead the next day.. I live in southern TN

This sounds great, easy, and a wonderful solution, and will fit my retirement budget too! Going to Walmart this am! I have a spreader. I will wait til after the rain, because the rainwater ponds, and pools in several places and stands for 2 days after a big rain. It is supposed to rain big, today. And Barley, my dog, loves to drink that rain water!

So, I will hand water it in after we get past our rainy spell in San Antonio. Why can't the fleas drown? It has certainly rained enough the last 6 weeks. Today again, I am planning to treat my dog and cats with flea shamp;oo, after treating the carpet again. Then, I plan to walk my dog, and keep him out of the backyard for a week for two, to give him a break.

Thank you so much for your response, and telling me how to use Eliminator. Fleas you are on notice!

Sounds like you need to call a professional because once the fleas get into your house (as they did in mine) you will have a horrible time bombing, vacuuming EVERY piece of upholstery in the dwelling over and over again until they are gone. My fleas showed up right before Christmas and had me in tears and ready to tear my hair out. You can get rid of them but it takes time and effort.

    • Susan Susan on Apr 16, 2017

Thanks so much for your reply. You are absolutely right about tearing my hair out. I keep bathing my large white dog in his flea shampoo. And after he goes out in the yard, he is just covered with these Texas sized large fleas. Thanks for your advice! I can't believe they are even jumping on the linoleum in the kitchen where he comes in from the backyard. Thanks!

Sprinkle diatomaceous earth in your home and outdoors. Purchase some Fleafree from a local health food store and add to water. will help keep the fleas away. It can get expensive to rid these things.

    • Susan Susan on May 08, 2017

Carol, I will check out Fleafree. Thanks for taking the time to respond. You are right these Texas size fleas are getting expensive! Many thanks!!

  • Im110014644 Im110014644 on Apr 16, 2017

I also use diatomaceous earth (food grade kind) ask for it at any feed store. Costs about $13 maybe a little me for 8-10# bag but last a long time. Google it first and see everything it does, it's awesome. Wearing a mask, I sprinkle on carpets let sit overnight then vacuum really good and through bag away. I spray all around baseboards and doorways with vinegar deluted very little. Helps keep them out of house. We used to have a kennel and used those two things in it all the time. Neither one will hurt the animals. It's very good for them, hardly ever had fleas unless they came in on other dogs. I'm glad I could be a help to you. Happy defleaing...

Sorry I have nothing on fleas inside or out. But where I live we have fleas and ticks. Lots of them but like I said so far lucky not in the house. For my teacup chi only three lbs. My vet suggested a seresto collar. Yes they are a little expensive but they last 8 months. This works so good. I used to take him out to do his business and before he was finished he would have ticks on himself. No more.

  • Susan Susan on Apr 19, 2017

Thanks! My cousin told me about this, I ordered one from 1-800-PetMeds, for an excellent low price, and it should be here in 2 days! You may want to check their prices. Thanks for your response. (that is also the name of their website!)

Diatomaceous Earth..Food grade/ I had 5 dogs and 2 cats, bad year for fleas...i sprinkled it all over my furniture, rugs, and heavily on my animals...left it for a few days, then vacuumed, repeat...I even put it outside the doors so when the animals came in the house they had to walk thru it... You can eat this stuff and it won't hurt you/your kids or your pets! Make sure it is food grade!! Use it as you need it... I use it in my vegetable garden, too. This is eco friendly stuff!

I grew up in South Florida and my mom battled fleas every year. I don't have any recommendations about dealing with them in the garden, but inside the house she used borax (29 Mule Team). She sprinkled it all over the floor and furniture -- especially carpets and upholstery, let it sit for a while, and then vacuumed it up. It is very effective and as far as I experienced non-toxic. It does need to be repeated as it kills the flea eggs and the dog always seemed to bring in more, but it was a simple and inexpensive cure. As far as the toxicity goes, none of our dogs got sick, it didn't seem to effect any of us humans, but it was the 1970's, so we weren't thinking too much about environmental factors. A couple of years ago she successfully used borax to clear out the little buggers from my great aunt's apartment. As aunt Irma got older she became less aware of the cleanliness of her home. After she passed away, we couldn't step 2 feet in her front door without getting covered with fleas. After a liberal sprinkling left for a couple of days, vacuumed and then repeated, no more fleas.

  • Food grade diatomacious earth... it cuts the exoskeleton and they dehydrate.... it will not harm anything..it can be sprinkled in carpet lightly.. etc. I use it on ant beds.. you can also sprinkle on dog beds.... no poison...😉

I definitely will add DE to my arsonal of flea attack items! Thanks!!!

  • Sharon Sharon on Apr 21, 2017

My vet recommended borax (20 mule team laundry borax). I made a shaker out of a jar, and punched holes in lid. You sprinkle on carpets, furniture, and leave for 3 hours, then vacumn up and discard contents outside in can. Do this every 9 days in flea season.

I also put down folded towels for cat to lay on, and shake outside daily.

Put sprinkler on in yard each evening, kills eggs. If your walking in and out of yard alot, put a waterbath to step in as most fleas come in on feet/shoes.

I dust my cat with diatomacious earth, using a jar and perforated lid, then brush it in as she is a long-hair.

If you have a dog bringing in ....try spraying him before he goes out.

If they are bad, I use my carpet cleaner, and I buy the gallon jug of pet commercial cleaner, and do the rugs, kitchen floor, even use the upholstry tool to do couches.

I am sensitive too to their bite, so I use non-chemical bug spray that contains eucyliptus, citronella on me.
