What plants might create a friendly fence?

We built a custom home starting 9 mos ago. The neighbor to our left started to build their home extremely close to the property line 7 months ago. I'm wondering what flowering trees or fruit trees might make a friendly border and provide a bit of privacy. We live in Zone 5, with deer, moose, and bears as our neighbors as well.

You must make sure there is enough space to plant between the property line.If at all possible I would recommend putting up a fence and planting in front of that. I have a neighbor who plants are on my property and they do not make care of them and are now dying.

Don't be too friendly. Block off as much as you can now. You never know who will be in that house in 5 years.

Doesn't your town have zoning laws? Usually they must be so many feet from another property. If not, I suggest dwarf Alberta spruce. I have several and the deer ignore them. They can be expensive and slow growing though. I still see a fence as your best bet.

Fence does sound like your best solution! In the mean time you may want to try Lilac Bushes which tend to grow tall every year for us, they are beautiful and smell great! Also there are the Rose of Sharon shrubs (bushes) their blooms are gorgeous and continue blooming several weeks throughout the summer! Good Luck!! (Fences Make Good Neighbors)

We had a hemlock fence when I was a child. It grew very tall where we didn't keep it trimmed. Arizona cypress is also pretty good at covering space, there is a blue cultivar also, I believe.

Mount Laurel and Skip Laurel!! Fabulous and they stay green all year ! When you trim them they fill in thicker and have a sweet white flower in the spring.

Wonderful plant choice for your needs!

As Sellerman mentioned, I think you'll be happiest with an evergreen. A fast growing choice is Leland Cypress. Theyre pyramidal in shape, but are much taller than wide.

Oops, I just saw they're appropriate for zones 6-10. I would ask at a nursery if they could recommend a fast growing evergreen for your zone.
