I'm not sure where you are but I'm in northern Illinois and my small little roses started to grow about a month ago. I don't cover them during winter either. When is in total shade the other in pure hot sun and they are the same and both have grown. I personally hate them but my husband likes them oh well. Anyway, if you are very up north then by all means contact the botanic garden.
