The BEST thing to do is to start out with a blank canvas. It is the EASIEST way to de-clutter an area or room. First, you will need to take everything out of the room. Everything! At this point, you might want to clean the carpet, wipe down the walls, clean the blinds and windows, and give the room an appearance of being fresh and like-new. If heavy furniture is involved, you may need to work around those pieces. After the clean-up, it is time to add the things back that you REALLY need or want to keep. Keep asking yourself if this is a "want" or a "need" item. If the item has not been used within a one-year period, get rid of it. You can always replace it later. In the things not brought back into the room, you now have two options: donate or trash . So, make the two piles and place the items in accordingly. You now will have a clean room or garage, a clutter-free mind, and the beginning of a new day!
Garage sale comes to mind!
If taking everything out of a room isn't feasible, start with a small area and decide what is important to keep and what is out dated, unused, or is broken or damaged. If you have multiples or simply don't use donate it, or throw it away. We moved last year and I decluttered before the move then again after the move. It's so freeing!
how much are you stepping over/on. if you had to go out a window because of fire could you get to it? are you reluctant to have friends over? are you embarresed over the state of your house? start sorting -garbage/ donate/ keep. my town has a spring and fall clean up day- no charge for removal if items are on the curb on a clean up day.
Place 3 boxes/containers in front of project/room.
Box 1: Give/Donate
Box 2: Throw away
Box 3: Keep
Only handle something once!
Pick up item & decide which box it will be placed!
If overwhelming, decide to declutter/organize 1hour. After 1 hour, take donaye box & thrash box out of area.
I've been selling my things on Craigslist. Most things for $5. Sometimes a group of things for $5. It gives me incentive to part with things
