How to get hostas to grow in clay soil
Soil is very shady and slimy when wet
The soil has to be super moist! Are you making sure of that on a daily basis? That could make all of the difference!!
Pull up the hasta and replace with loriope. Snails loved my hasta so much that they ate it to death. I ended with the ugliest, holey hasta you ever saw, and thank goodness snails don't like loriope. Hasta and loriope will propagate on their own so much so that you will have to thin it out once it gets going.
First of all, they love shade. Also, every spring you should thin them out. You should do this right after they start to sprout. Cori is right, they should be watered regularly. And don't crowd them. Good luck and good gardening.
Cori, I lived in Florida for awhile but back up North where Hostas are great in shade as around a large tree. They are not great with heat.
