By wanting to paint cabinets white, I assume you want a clean, uncluttered look. Remove the decals/magnets from the dishwasher and fascia and remove all the clutter from the counter tops. This room is much too busy.
My kitchen cabinets are very plain - no trim or decorative routing. They are painted a glossy white and didn't even have any knobs or pulls on the doors and drawers. Being elderly, I could not do very much to make them pretty or interesting. I just added red ceramic knobs everywhere and cleaned them good. The white paint sparkled and the red knobs are a conversation topic when someone new comes into the house.
We are in the process of a kitchen makeover and will paint our cabinets using Annie Slone chalk paint with a top coat of shellac for gloss. The chalk paint only requires a good cleaning--- no sanding and no priming . Check her site . Good luck to both of us !!!
A friend of mine bought a kit from Home Depot named Rustoleum Transformations for Kitchen Cabinets. It comes in a variety of colors which Home Depot mixes for you. A $75.00 kit covers 100 s.f., and there is no sanding or anything involved,.....just cleaning the cabinets first. It comes with full instructions. She said it was easy and her cabinets looked Wonderful, when finished. She bought two kits to cover 185 s.f., so it cost $150.00, plus the paint brushes and drop cloth she bought! That was one year ago and her cabinets still look Amazing!!
Remove the doors and hardware. Mark the doors and cabinets with tape where they go. Lightly sand the doors and cabinets to remove any gloss. Prime with a stain blocking primer like Zinsser 123. Then paint with your color. Seal with at least three coats with a water based polyurethane. Use a small foam roller and foam brush for a smooth finish.
Mine are so old they are falling apart. I bought this high quality contact paper (2 rolls-$60) and got a farmhouse look. Everyone loves the look and it feels so much betterf
