Painting Laminated Cabinets

What is the best way to paint laminated kitchen cabinets with parts of the laminate missing? It seems to me I will need to remove the remaining laminate to make the surface smooth. Is there an easier way? How can I remove the existing laminate ?

You should be able to remove the laminate by taking them off the hinges, and using a putty knife from the sides/corners. Then you could sand a but and use chalk paint!

You can try using a blow dryer on high heat to warm up the laminate and soften the adhesive. Keep the blow dryer moving so not to burn the laminate. The fumes are are terrible and harmful. Lift the laminate off with a putty knife. Be careful it will be hot and sticky. If the laminate won't come off you can patch the areas with wood putty, let it dry, sand to smooth out, and level with the existing laminate. Then you can paint the cabinets.

Remove the doors and hardware. Mark the doors and cabinets with tape where they go. Lightly sand the doors and cabinets to remove any gloss. Prime with a stain blocking primer like Zinsser 123. Then paint with your color. Seal with at least three coats with a water based polyurethane. Use a small foam roller and foam brush for a smooth finish.

I've been wondering about this too. My laminated cabinets are 40+ years old & while they are still in good condition, I'm tired of looking at my dark & dreary kitchen. I painted the walls a light blue, but that only helped the walls, not the cabinets.. lol. Thanks for the instructions. They'll be a great help!
