Peel and stick tiles are perfect for this, because you can cut them with a razor blade to the exact shape around the designs that you like..
Good idea, Cori! I was going to say with a tile-cutter you can use any tile you choose, just lay out the pattern and cut whatever pieces are necessary to fit around the art tiles.
I would lay a sheet of clear plastic contact paper (sold by roll) over it, then mark the tile locations on the film. Now you can peel it off, and lay on any type of sheet application like stainless steel, tile ceiling tiles, fiberglass, etc.
You could apply stones. I have seen the ones from the dollar store used and it looks great. Glue and grout. The contrast to your art tiles would also help them stand out.
