I have one of those in my basement. It wasn't a pretty paneling either! It is quite a large room and I just couldn't stand it any more so out came the primer and paint. It took a while to do the project but I have never been sorry. It is a brighter more up to date look. Hope this helps. Wasn't sure what you were looking for in your"fix".
Paint
We used a textured wallpaper to cover our paneling. As long as it isn't a shiny or smooth paper no need to cover the grooves. We primed the walls first so the surface wasn't slick. It held up very well .
What do you mean by "fix"?? Is it damaged or do you just dislike it. If it's the latter, paint is your best friend!
My mother built in the early 70s when paneling was all the rage . A few years back she decided she was sick of it but couldn't afford to redo the entire house . She painted in light and inviting colors. It made a world of difference !
