Hi,
You can do lots of fun things by layering molding over 2X4s. Mount 2X4s in a V into the corner, then go crazy with the shelf and the molding!
For added support at the ends of the shelf, maybe some wrought iron shelf brackets to match the stove. Have fun!
Sounds great!
Don't forget that heat rises! put the shelf high enough and vet the back for safety.
I don't know what brand of stove you have, but we have a flat screen tv mounted on the wall behind our Harmon stove. Neither our Harmon in our family room or our Lopi in our living room put out any heat to the back. The fans force the heat out to the front and down. Just make sure that you mount your shelf high enough so it doesn't get in the way of filling your stove.
Some of the most interesting ones (to my taste anyways) were where the owners had used crown moulding to build a DEEP corner shelf in the back of their wood stoves (pic below.)
They could then use the mantle to create visually interesting seasonal themes, or just scenic vignettes.
Seems most are built starting 2-3' up from the surface of the stovetop.
I've added one example i saw (below) but there are unlimited mantle materials to have fun thinking about-from reclaimed barnwood beams to using sleek and sophisticated metals (like steel or aluminum from a salvage yard/facility perhaps) or even customized by creating a stencil template of your own design...or if your artistically inclined & can paint, maybe your own trompe l'oeil along the front of the mantle.
Hope this input will inspire you-would love to see pics of whatever you end up doing!
I love the reclaimed barn wood idea!
How about a nice piece of natural wood (tree limb or small tree base). I've seen them done with one side sliced off and the wood is epoxed to show grain.
