You got this!!
Well, you could pick a cool color that you love and have not had the nerve to use on a wall, etc. Cut the feet (or footed corners) off. Then, buy some sofa feet (bun, square, etc.) which you can find online in several colors. If there is any other curly, curvy on the chest, I would cut them off, too. Sand those cut areas really well, so no one gets scratched from the rough wood and looks more professionally finished. Prime the entire thing. Then, paint it with at least one coat, maybe two coats. That would depend if the room could handle all that color or if you should antique it. That would tone it done a bit.
It won't look like the same chest and you will still get its function.
Please post a picture when you are done.
Depending on how old the chest is it may be worth something just the way it is. If you are thinking about passing it down to one of your children someday DO NOT do anything to it.
But if you still want to...Just strip it if it is painted then lightly sand it . If it is not painted just lightly sand it. Then you can do anything you want. Paint it in a bold color, paint in an abstract pattern, paint it then use a leaf and vine pattern. You can go to http://thegraphicsfairy.com/ and get some wonderful ideas.
Is it solid wood or a veneer?
It's solid wood. The old style with the heart painted on the front.
