  • My landscaper told me that certain trees in my area are prone to blights, like my flowering plum. It has a blackish looking mold and it is not really harmful, some of it can be cut off, but mostly just leave it alone. Not sure what your tree has or if something can be done. It could be a widespread local problem. You may have to ask a local garden center?

If it looks like this picture, it's a fungus called lichen. It can be green, grey, red, orange, yellow or brown. I've seen an overabundance of it in the last 3 years on roofs, trees, gravestones and other places. It's completely harmless to your tree.
