Help! our Toilet keeps running!!!

Our toilet keeps running and we aren't sure what to do now. We already replaced the stuff in the tank and then we replaced the seal under the toilet. That stopped it for about a month but now it's running off and on again. So what now?

First, is the float shutting the water off when it gets to the right level but the tank leaks down and has to refill? Or does the water just not shut off and runs down the overflow? Something in the tank is not right and we may be able to help you to pinpoint it. It is either in the flush or the fill mechanisms.

Not sure but our chain the pulled the flapper up was too long and kept getting under the flapper and the toilet ran and ran . Another time the water kept coming up and going over the overflow....had to bend the arm of the float a little to position it right.

Did you adjust the height of the fill valve so its just about even with the top of the tank? Did you adjust the float so the water level is one inch below the overflow pipe. The thin rubber refill tube from the fill valve goes to the overflow pipe but needs to be above or level with the top of the overflow pipe. Usually a refill clip comes with a fill valve to mount the tube. Make sure there is at least 1/2" play in the chain from the flush handle and the flapper. The chain must be loose so the flapper creates a positive seal. Also make sure the flush handle is tightened in the tank slot. The seal under the toilet has nothing to do with the operation of the toilet. Just seals the toilet so flush water doesn't splash back and prevents sewer gas backup. Hope this helps!

I have Toto toilets and I have found that you need a specific Flapper made by Toto for the specific toilet, even then if you don't hold the handle down until the tank is almost empty the flapper will not fall correctly and you don't get a correct seal. Make sure you get the manufacturers flapper for the model of toilet, not all flappers fit well or fall correctly?

Go to a one piece toilet (research quality on internet) and remove a lot of parts that could be at fault and it might be cheaper in the long run if your locality charges what mine does (Suffolk, VA) for water!

Here is a trick that may help you see if it is the wrong flapper in the toilet....one flapper used to do all toilets not any more...I put some vaseline on the flapper to really make it seal and if that helps you probably have the wrong flapper..or a bad flapper. or something stuck to the flapper or the flapper hole like sand ( that you probably can't see with your eye ....also you can put food coloring in the tank and see if it leaks into the toilet as a test...and you also have to have the right fluid master...or as in the TOTO..( which I also have) one made by TOTO..Good luck..

    Hi,

I had one of those annoying very slight leaks to the cistern which caused the overflow pipe to empty into the pan. Used food dye to check it was still leaking slightly.Had to clean the lime scale off the seat where the flap valve sat to ensure a better - perfect seal. Also had to clean and reseat the stopper valve to the supply pipe as it kept on weeping - used a nail file and then 800 grit wet and dry sand paper to make sure it was completely smooth and flat. Hasn't leaked in over 12 months.
