Ammonia is very agressive for brass and other copper metal based materials. There is a thing called "white stone" witch will work well to have the shine back. It's a whit block in a pot sold with a thin sponge. Simple wet the sponge, take some of the white block witch will sparkle a bit, and clean you object. Do it as much as you'll need. Thence rince with water. The "white stone" will also protect your object once dry afterward.
