Refinishing an indoor wrought iron railing- any suggestions?

I have a wrought iron railing on my circular staircase going from my foyer to upstairs. It has brass knobs which I polished and look great but the black wrought iron is old and icky looking. I want to refinish it but I cannot remove the railing and its not like I can sand it and wash it down before painting like I would an outdoor one. Any suggestions how to get 70 years of "ick" off and then make it look new?

You can use heavy-duty methods to take away rust if the other methods do not work. These include rust converter chemicals, chemical rust removers, or a sander to buff away rust spots which are hard to remove. Once you've washed the railings, the railings should air dry before moving on to painting or the like. good luck!!

Thank you! Luckily there is no rust. Just goop. I am not even sure what it is.

Hand goop, kids probably loved the staircase. Clean thoroughly using a natural compound and be sure to tarp the area at the base. You can repaint when cleaning is done. Vinegar and baking soda work great on goop!

thank you - I bet you're right - bought the house at 70 years old and only one owner who felt 'another cost of paint' would fix everything so maybe didn't clean rails and my scrubbing is just the very surface!

I would give the railings a deep cleaning. I use steel wool. (be sure to wear plastic gloves) When dry, Paint with Rustoleum color of your choice. They make pads that will bend almost like a glove and can save lots of time. I've redone several wrought iron items and love Rustoleum hammered finish..
