Spring flowering shrubs should not be pruned until after flowering stops.

I trim my lilac bushes as soon as the flowers die. Make sure to cut out the dead wood in the center also. My bushes are at least 40 years old. They produce beautiful, abundant flowers every spring. I love the look and smell of lilacs.

It was easier for me to remember..."These shrubs produce blooms on "old wood." meaning that if you trim these shrubs after they bloom, they have the summer, then winter to make "old wood!"
